Science on tap

Researchers from the Zepler Institute are preparing to head out into local Southampton pubs to present their latest discoveries as part of the Pint of Science Festival. The festival, which runs from 18th-20th May 2015, brings some of the most brilliant scientists to venues across the UK to discuss their research and findings with members of the public.

Among the events on offer, Southampton will be serving up two opportunities to find out about Zepler Institute research;

'Particles Go Quantum' (18th May 2015), will feature talks by Dr Matt Himsworth on his research into ultra cold atoms - 'The Coolest Stuff in the Universe', and Dr Simone De Liberato, looking at the unique properties of a new type of particle - half light and half matter, which promises to be a game-changer for quantum technology. Joining them will be, Martin Fogel, one of the most prominent guitarists to emerge from Sweden in recent years who is exploring quantum phenomena through music as artist-in-residence within the Quantum Light and Matter Group.

In 'Photonics: the future of data' (19 May 2015), the ORC's Professor Peter Smith and Dr Francesca Parmigiani will explore the many powerful applications of light in the Big Data era. From the unique features of nonlinear processes and their uses in secure communications and quantum computing ('Nonlinear Light: from Missile Defence to Quantum Computers') to the potential for all-optical signal processing to provide an environmentally-friendly solution to the impending internet capacity crunch (“Mum, Why’s the Internet So Slow?!").

Information about all the events taking place in Southampton can be found on the Pint of Science, Southampton website.
