Dr Ke Li from the Zepler Institute has won the Gold Award and two UoS PhD from the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) students have managed to reach Top 10.

Huawei has recently organised a competition for PhD students and post docs studying at Universities in Europe, to present their work.

A number of PhD students and postdocs from the University of Southampton have responded to the call and the outcome of the competition found Dr Li Ke, Senior Research Fellow at the Zepler Institute with the Gold Award and two PhD students from the Optoelectronics Research Centre amongst the Top 10.

Dr Ke L''s paper title was on 'Electronic-photonic convergenece for silicon photonics transmitters beyond 100 Gbps on-off keying'.

"I'm delighted and honoured to have my work recognised by the world-leading industry company, Huawei, particularly given the strong competition from all across Europe for this prize," says Dr Ke Li.

"Definitely, it reflects the strength of the work in Silicon Photonics that is happening at Southampton, and consequently, I'm extremely grateful to my colleagues for their help, support and encouragement," adds Ke.

"I'm delighted for Ke, in getting this recognition. It is richly deserved. He has initiated our electronic-photonic integration from scratch over several years, and has developed it to be world leading, such that we have regained the world record for the transmission data rate from a single silicon Mach-Zehnder modulator-driver combination," said Professor Graham Reed, Professor of Silicon Photonics and Deputy Director of the ORC.

Two more University of Southampton researchers made it to the Top 10 - Stefan-Tudor Ilie and Xingshi Yu.

Stefan's paper was on silicon-rich silicon nitride CMOS platform for integrated optical phased arrays.

Xingshi's paper was on electrically erasable optical I/O for water scale testing on silicon photonic integrated circuits.

"I feel very excited to share my research with people from the industry and other universities. I also learned the newest research progress of silicon photonics from other groups. This is a really meaningful activity for me," said Xingshi Yu.
